Fostering
A Rewarding Experience
Fostering a cat or a dog is a great way to enjoy the love and attention of an animal without making a permanent commitment. Georgia Homeless Pets doesn’t have a permanent facility so fostering is an essential part of the organization. By taking an animal into your home, you allow us to save more cats and dogs.
- What does a foster parent do?
You love the animal and take care of it as if it were your own! - But, I have my own pet(s). Can I still foster?
Absolutely! - What if my pets don’t get along with the new foster?
We want the animal to be in the right home whether it is a permanent home or a temporary home so, if you find that the animal is not working out in your home, we will certainly allow you to try a different one. - Do I have to pay for food and vet care?
We ask that you provide food and litter but we take care of any necessary vet visits and vaccinations. - How long does it take for an animal to get adopted?
This depends on who is looking for the type of animal you are fostering (age, color, personality etc.) at any given time. It may also depend on how frequently you are able to bring the animal to adoptions. We ask that you bring the animal to adoptions at least twice a month. We are at the Smyrna and Austell PetSmarts on Saturday from 12-4. Bringing the animal to adoptions allows people to see and interact with the animal. - So, how do I become a foster parent?
You start by filling out one of our applications. The application is the same for fostering or adopting. You simply check the box indicating you want to foster. To foster a cat, click here. To foster a dog, click here. - I can’t foster because I would become too attached.
We hear this a lot and we understand. The love you give and receive from an animal can make it difficult to part with the animal when it gets adopted. However, it can also be quite rewarding to see the animal go to a good home and know that you helped save that animal and gave the animal a chance to find a furever home. We also encourage updates from new owners which allows us some closure as well.
